YEAR: 1982
The GTV6 is ready to become a myth. It already is, for all Alfistas. Its seductive lines and technical qualities are rapidly gathering approval from all car enthusiasts, without distinctions. The fantastic Busso engine and its competitive achievements complete the picture of a car whose quotations are ready to rise steeply.
The story of this car started in 1967, when Alfa Romeo decided to replace the Giulia GT with an equally sporty but more comfortable car, with four true seats and a roomy boot. To meet Alfa Romeo’s request, Giorgetto Giugiaro (Italdesign) created this coupé: comfortable, spacious, and versatile, all without losing its sporty character. The trick was to simply move the volumes backwards, creating space in the rear for passengers and cargo. Additionally, a rear door was preferred over the less versatile separate boot.
The Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 6 2.5’s shell was one of the first to be designed using a computer. The result was an innovative line, faithful to the expectations of an Alfista clientele that with time had evolved and become increasingly unwilling to compromise.
In 1982, with a restyling that greatly affected the car’s aesthetic (plastic details, rear lights…), a new top-of-the-range engine was introduced: a 2,500 cc fuel-injected Busso V6, that brought the coupé’s performance to first-rate levels.
The Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 6 2.5 stood out amongst its little siblings thanks to the bulge on its hood, a somewhat ungraceful—and yet tremendously sexy—detail that became the dream of millions of fans.
It is impossible not to mention this car’s brilliant competitive career, which peaked with the victories at the European Touring Car Championship from 1982 to 1985.
Beauty, speed, a racing pedigree: this Alfetta Coupé lacked nothing.
In 1982 the London artist Billy Idol confirmed his success thanks to his eponymous album, now a milestone of the Eighties and of pop rock in general. From this masterpiece came the single “White Wedding”.
